Mayo day service proposal turned down on zoning grounds

A PROPOSAL by Western Care to operate a day service at the Golden Mile Industrial Park in Castlebar has been rejected.

Application was sought for a change of use from office to day services at The IPI Centre in the industrial park, on the Breaffy Road.

However, planners have refused planning permission.

A report stated that the section of the building subject of the planning application appears to be currently vacant.

The site is zoned Enterprise and Employment in the Castlebar Local Area Plan 2023-2029.

The planning assessment report considered that the proposed development (nursing home/retirement village/residential care) is normally not permitted on lands zoned Enterprise and Employment.

A recommendation to refuse permission would be made for this reason, as the proposed development would materially contravene a policy objective set out in the Local Area Plan.

Planners found that the development is considered inappropriate at this location and if permitted would contravene materially a development objective for zoning of land and would establish an undesirable precedent, and be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
