Three Mayo sports stars honoured at civic reception

THREE young Mayo sports stars were honoured at a civic reception in Westport yesterday evening.

The ceremony, hosted by the Westport Municipal District, celebrated the achievements of Holly and Freya Renton and Eoghan Jennings.

Athletes Holly and Freya, members of Westport Athletic Club, and Eoghan Jennings, Westport Tennis Club, have been making their mark in their respective sports at local, national and international level.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Peter Flynn, along with area colleagues Councillor Brendan Mulroy, Councillor Chris Maxwell and Councillor John O'Malley, were joined in a packed town hall by members of the local community to pay tribute and recognise the sporting excellence of the young trio.

Said Councillor Flynn: “We are blessed to have three stars of this calibre in our community and we are so proud of their achievements to date at national and international level.

“Looking forward to see what the future holds for all three of them.”

Speakers also included Joanne Duffy and Orlaith Hopkins, representing Westport Tennis Club and Westport AC.
