Annual Easter Lily campaign launched in Mayo town

The annual Easter Lily campaign has been launched in Castlebar ahead of the 1916 Rising Commemorations.

The Chairperson of Castlebar Sinn Féin, Donna Hyland, said: "The Easter Lily remains a powerful symbol of remembrance, honouring the men and women of 1916 who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom in 1916 and in the generations that followed.

"This year is of particular significance because it marks the 100th anniversary of the very first Easter Lily campaign, organised by Cumann na mBan in 1926.

"It is important to remember that Cumann na mBan chose the Easter Lily because it includes the colours green, white and orange and represents the north and south of Ireland united.

"The Easter Lily is more than a symbol of remembrance. It represents the sacrifice of Irish patriots, their love of country, and our continued pursuit of a united and equal Ireland, as set out in the Irish Proclamation. I invite people to wear the Easter Lily to reflect on our history and to recommit to the work that remains unfinished."

To commemorate the Easter Lily centenary, Castlebar Sinn Féin held an inaugural Irish Republican lecture on Cumann na mBan by local historian Noel Campbell. Castlebar Sinn Féin extends its appreciation to Noel Campbell for his contribution and to all who attended the event.

Easter Lilies will be available to members of the public, free of charge, at the Easter Lily stall in SuperValu shopping centre Castlebar, on April 4, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The main Mayo Sinn Féin Easter Commemoration takes place in Achill, meeting at Dookinella church at 10.30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 5. Speakers include Rose Conway-Walsh TD and Councillor Gerry Murray.

All are welcome to attend.
