Mayo graduate pivots career with TG4 internship
SINCE 2018 TG4 has invited applications from third-level graduates, or newcomers to the industry, to participate in a year-long work experience internship programme with the Irish language station.
Internships within TG4 offer valuable hands-on experience across a range of media roles, particularly for those with strong Irish language skills. Opportunities include placements in areas such as social media, production, and sports broadcasting, where interns contribute to content creation, live event coverage, and digital engagement.
TG4 is currently seeking new interns, providing an exciting opportunity for individuals to develop practical skills in a dynamic, Irish-language media environment while building a strong foundation for a career in broadcasting.
Among this year’s interns is Séadna Ó Domhnaill from Killala, who is currently completing a year-long internship with Bloc TG4. This marks a significant shift from his academic background in commerce, having graduated from the University of Galway with a first-class honours degree in the BComm le Gaeilge, into the world of media.
Séadna decided to take on the internship with Bloc, one of TG4’s sub-brands, after producing content with them during his studies and because of his strong interest in contemporary media.
A passionate musician and piper, he grew up immersed in traditional Irish music, participating in the Fleadh from an early age and continuing to perform with his siblings today in their band, InTune. Although he did not grow up speaking Irish or attend a Gaelscoil, his interest in the language was sparked after attending a summer course as a teenager in one of the Coláistí Samhraidh on the Aran Islands.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Séadna says the internship is “an extremely valuable experience” and encourages other graduates to consider it as a way to build skills and confidence.
If you’re interested in becoming part of the next group of TG4 interns, send your CV with a cover letter to cv@tg4.ie.
The closing date for applications is Sunday, April 12.
