Mayo judge tells man (32) he 'brought other people into the misery he had brought on himself'

A MAN has been remanded on continuing bail for a probation report after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis at Castlebar District Court.

Dualta O'Donnell, Ballynonagh, Clonbur, Co. Galway, pleaded guilty to a section 3 charge of possession of cannabis and a section 3 charge of cocaine possession.

Sergeant Conor McShane told the court that on January 12, 2023, Garda Hyland of the divisional drugs unit executed a search warrant at O'Donnell's property at The Neale, Ballinrobe.

O'Donnell and his partner were present.

Cannabis valued at €862.60 was found inside the property, and cocaine valued at €1,060 was found outside.

O'Donnell was cautioned, arrested and accepted ownership of the drugs.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone told the court his client was 32 years of age and the father of three young children.

He said O'Donnell had been addicted to drugs and his involvement in supply was to feed his own habit.

He had since changed his life, completing the Prime for Life programme in May 2024, and had managed to remain drug-free.

Mr. Mulchrone said O'Donnell was in a stable relationship and in employment, and suggested a probation report would help provide direction for his client going forward.

Judge Vincent Deane said O'Donnell had brought other people into the misery he had brought on himself and had added to the difficulties facing society.

Mr. Mulchrone said a probation report would typically take six to eight weeks to prepare.

The matter was adjourned until June 23 for a probation report and finalisation.
