Mayo town in mourning over death of 'true gentleman' Tom Byrne
The death has occurred of Tom (Thomás) Byrne, Knockroe, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, and formerly of McHale Road, Castlebar.
A member of a widely-known and respected family, he died peacefully yesterday at Roscommon Hospice, surrounded by his loving family in the wonderful care of the staff at the Roscommon Hospice.
The news evoked an outpouring of immense loss and sorrow in both Castlerea and Castlebar.
Tom will be sadly missed by his heartbroken children Jennifer (Reilly, Belmullet), Claire (London), and Tommy (Dublin), adored grandchildren Ella and Daithí, brothers Seamus, Liam, Sean, Padraig and Brendan, his sister Ena (Tobin), son-in-law David, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the Byrne family on their loss.
Tom, who worked with the psychiatric health services in Castlerea for many years and was a regular visitor to his home town, was a son of the late Tommy and Maggie Byrne, McHale Road.
He was also predeceased by his sister, Anne Sweeney, Ballyheane.
Many of the tributes to Tom on social media have joined in describing him as 'a true gentleman'.
Reposing at Gaynor’s Funeral Home, The Square, Castlerea (F45 HH24) on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
Funeral arriving at St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea, for Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Burial takes place afterwards in Castlebar New Cemetery (travelling via McHale Road).
