Mayo's Pizza Pod celebrates one year milestone

A SMALL pizza truck that once travelled between Foxford and Ballina Quay has grown into one of Ballina’s most loved food spots, as Pizza Pod celebrates its first year on Tone Street this April.

Run by husband-and-wife team Tony and Susan McCready, Pizza Pod has become a familiar name in the town over the past year, known for its authentic pizzas, friendly service, and strong connection to the local community.

The business first began as a mobile pizza truck, serving customers across north Mayo. But in April last year, the McCreadys took the leap and opened a permanent premises in Ballina, a move that brought both opportunity and challenge.

“It was a big step going from the truck to the shop,” says Susan.

“There were definitely days where we wondered what we had taken on. Hospitality isn’t easy, and there’s no switch-off. But the support we’ve had from the community has been incredible and has kept us going.”

Over the past year, Pizza Pod has built a loyal following, serving everything from quick slices and lunches to full family orders, while also expanding into catering for local businesses including the credit union and Telus.

The team has also introduced a popular pub delivery service, working with local favourites such as Harrison’s Bar, An Bolg Buí and Rouse’s Pub to deliver pizza directly to customers enjoying a night out from Friday to Sunday.

At the heart of Pizza Pod is Tony, who remains hands-on in the kitchen and counter.

“I’m in there making the pizzas, serving customers, that’s what I love,” he says. “It’s all about doing it right. We focus on proper Roman and Neapolitan-style pizzas, using good ingredients and taking the time with it. That’s what people come back for.”

The menu has continued to grow over the year, now including fresh sandwiches at lunch, slices, sides, lasagne, and Italian street-food favourites such as supplì - all made with the same focus on quality and flavour.

Behind the scenes, Susan manages the business while also working full-time in mental health services with the HSE, a balancing act that reflects the family-run nature of Pizza Pod.

“It’s very much a family effort,” she says.

“The kids help out, everyone chips in, and we have a great team around us as well. That’s been a huge part of getting through the first year.”

Pizza Pod has also placed a strong emphasis on inclusive hiring, working with local supports to create opportunities for people with disabilities to be part of the team.

As they mark their first year in business, the McCreadys say the focus is simple: Keep growing, keep improving, and continue serving the community that supported them from day one.

“We’re still learning, still building,” adds Tony.

“The first year hasn’t been without its challenges, but the support from the community has made all the difference, it’s what’s kept us going.”

Pizza Pod is located on Tone Street, Ballina, and continues to serve Thursday to Sunday with an evolving menu of pizzas, sandwiches, and Italian-inspired dishes.
