Mayo school's national sporting success celebrated at civic reception

THE sporting achievements of the Sacred Heart School, Westport, on the national stage were celebrated at a civic reception yesterday evening, hosted by the cathaoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District, Councillor Peter Flynn.

Sacred Heart School teams recently won both the All-Ireland Intermediate Cross Country Championship and the All-Ireland Under 16 GAA Junior A Championship.

Councillor Flynn hailed their success at the reception held in Westport Town Hall: “Winning even one All-Ireland title at this level in a year is a fantastic accomplishment, but securing two within the space of just a few weeks is truly remarkable.

“To put it in perspective, it has been 31 years since a Junior A title last came to Mayo.

“Huge credit goes to the players and athletes for their dedication and success, but these achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support of coaches, parents, supporters, and the school itself.

“The local Gaelic clubs of Westport, Burrishoole and Kilmeena have all played a very significant role in this success, alongside Westport AC and Aughagower AC, who continue to nurture such exceptional athletic talent.”

Guests at the reception included SHS student Deputy Keira Keogh, along with Michael Ring.

Councillor Flynn extended thanks to his council colleagues Councillor Brendan Mulroy, Councillor John O'Malley and Councillor Chris Maxwell for nominating the teams, as well as the Westport Municipal District and town hall teams and the local community who supported the special occasion honouring two exceptional teams.
