Mayo Oireachtas member suffers double injury in football encounter
Mayo Oireachtas member Mark Duffy has suffered a double injury in a football encounter.
The Fine Gael senator sustained a dislocated shoulder and collarbone while making a late save in Ballina Town's 3-1 over Westport United in a Mayo Super League clash at the weekend at United Park, Westport.
Speaking to The Connaught Telegraph, he confirmed he will be wearing a sling for a number of weeks - but otherwise he is fine.
He was very thankful to Westport United, local paramedics and the staff of the emergency department of Mayo University Hospital for the care he received.
"I returned to playing for Ballina Town because the club was hit with a goalkeeping injury crisis and I agreed to give them a dig out.
"Unfortunately, the game was nearly over when I dislocated both my collarbone and and shoulder. I can't see myself playing again, to be honest, but I still enjoyed my return despite what happened."
Westport United manager Jason McCartney has wished him well in his recovery.
"I hope he recovers well and it's not too serious.
"He made some great saves, including the one where he got the injury."
Senator Duffy travelled by train to Dublin today to fulfil his Oireachtas commitments.
"I'm be fine in a few weeks," he added.
