The Moynihans.

Stunning new album by Cork siblings has Mayo connection

Black Brook is the stunning new album from musical siblings Deirdre Moynihan on fiddle, viola and vocals, Mayo-based teacher Diarmaid on pipes and whistles and Donncha on guitars and bouzouki.

Recorded and produced by Donncha at The Rise Studios in their native Cork City, the album takes it’s name from one of the tributaries which flows into the river Lee at the mouth of Cork harbour.

The three musicians have recorded and toured with many artists over the last few years and have distilled their many musical experiences into this wonderful 11-track album.

The album contains gorgeous versions of the songs Silent Oh Moyle and An Raibh Tù ar an gCarraig with sumptuous string arrangements and spine tingling pipes.

The band are joined by guest vocalist Liam O’ Maonlaí and drummer Martin Leahy for beautiful arrangements of Farewell, Farewell and Aird Uí Chuain.

There are cracking new compositions from all three musicians, thunderous sets of jigs and reels and gorgeous reflective pieces.

It is a very welcome return to the fold by three of the most lyrical musicians who first came to prominence as founders of the groundbreaking band Calico.

The album will be launched with a special concert in The Linenhall Theatre, Castlebar, on Saturday, October 1, at 8 p.m.

Admission is free but booking is advisable.
