Council makes decisive move on Mayo athletics track proposal

MAYO Independent candidate, Harry Barrett, has confirmed that Mayo County Council has made an application for funding for a multisport facility under the LSSIF programme of the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport.

This included a running track facility at Knockaphunta in Castlebar

Barrett continued: "Board members of Castlebar Athletics Club and indeed Mayo County Council must be commended for getting this major application in this week.

“The amount of work involved was substantial and all credit must go to the board of Castlebar Athletics Club and Mr Padraig Philbin, and his staff, in Mayo County Council.

“I am aware that this application is with the Minister of Transport Tourism and Sport, and I have contacted the minister's office to track this application.

"There are 174 children in Castlebar and their parents who are waiting for this facility to be delivered.

“This facility was promised to them over seven years ago and needs to be delivered in the shortest possible time frame. Children cannot be expected to train on inferior tracks with no changing facilities in 2019.

“The roots of Castlebar Athletics Athletics Club run deep. Parents and indeed grandparents are watching this application and want a successful outcome.”
