Popular duck race and heritage day cancelled

THE popular annual duck race and heritage day in Turlough has been cancelled this year.

Turlough Heritage Committee were forced to cancel the family fun day planned for August 4 due to it possibly clashing with the Mayo v Donegal football match in MacHale Park on the same day.

If the match goes ahead on the Sunday the usual road closure order organisers obtain would not be available as Turlough village would have to remain open to accommodate traffic flow attending the match.

Committee secretary Denis Igoe said the exact date for the match – it will be either on the Saturday evening or Sunday – will not be confirmed until the week of the match.

That left the committee in an impossible situation where they couldn't sell tickets for an event they might have to cancel if the game was also on the Sunday.

Alot of effort has already gone into the event, with tickets and posters printed, but Mr. Igoe confirmed it will not be rescheduled this year.

The feedback from people has been one of disappointment but they understand the dilemma organisers faced and that they couldn't risk having to cancel and then try to refund people who had bought tickets.
