Castlebar Mitchels crowned Mayo senior league champions

Castlebar Mitchels 2-17

Hollymount/Carramore 3-8

CASTLEBAR Mitchels have been crowned Mayo senior league Division 1 champions following their victory over Hollymount/Carramore at Hollymount.

But they were given a scare when, after leading by 10 points with 40 minutes played, they were pegged back by the home side which left the two teams deadlocked with eight minutes remaining.

However, Castlebar, lining out without a number of regulars, regained the upperhand in the closing stages and went on to win the game by six points.

A pointed free by David Stenson was followed by a second goal for Mitchels less than 60 seconds later.

This time is was substitute James Durcan who supplied the finish to the net after a cross from Neil Douglas.

There was no way back for Hollymount /Carramore and it was Mitchels who finished the game off with two further points from Donie Newcombe and David Stenson

As a result of this defeat Hollymount/Carramore are still in the relegation zone and will have to beat Claremorris in their final game to make sure they stay up. They are locked together with Charlestown on four points.

However, should Hollymount/Carramore equal the Charlestown result in the final round they will stay in Division 1 as they won their head-to-head with the east Mayo side.
