Mayo Tesco staff set to go on strike

TESCO staff in Mayo are set to go on strike from Monday.

Mandate, the trade union representing the workers, has confirmed that pickets will be placed on more than 70 Tesco outlets across the country on May 16, including three in Mayo - Ballina, Castlebar and Westport.

This follows the company’s confirmation that they will be implementing pay cuts and changes to conditions of employment for up to 300 of their staff.

The union stated the supermarket chain has the capacity to prevent the strike by withdrawing their threat to cut workers’ wages without agreement or by attending the Labour Court for a hearing on the matters in dispute.

Tesco management is attempting to make changes to workers’ conditions of employment, including 15 to 35% pay cuts, cutting of overtime and changes to rosters according to the Union.

Ciaran Campbell, Mandate's divisional organiser for Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo, stated the workers feel they are left with no option but to strike.
