Ignition Racing to take on the world

A TEAM of secondary school students from Presentation College, Headford, are set to take on the world this October as they compete in the world’s biggest science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) competition in Austin, Texas.

Ignition Racing are taking part in the F1 in Schools competition, aimed at promoting the STEM subjects, combined with business and marketing.

Ignition Racing comprises three students from Presentation College, Headford. The students, from Headford, Ballinrobe and Shrule/Glencorrib, are Ryan Spencer, Mark Jennings and Jason Murphy.

Teams must produce a 1:20 scale model of an F1 car of their own design, which is powered by a single compressed gas canister, and travels down the 20-metre track in just under a second.

Teams must also produce elements such as a pit display and portfolio and deliver various presentations to judges on collaboration, learning, innovation and the all-important car.

Similar to the real F1 world, teams must acquire sponsors and show the judges that excellent return on investment has been given to sponsors in return for their finance and services.

Teams from over 40 countries will be competing at the world finals. Ignition Racing have already scooped awards for best verbal presentation and best engineered car in the regional final and the best pit display award in the national final.

But the Headford students market themselves with very unique selling points. They are the second team from their school to qualify for the world finals and provide all sponsors and partners with significant return on investment.

Competing in the world finals does not come cheap, with travel and competition fees added to car, portfolio and pit display costs reaching in the region of €30,000.
