Restoration worker goes to great heights for a selfie

A SELFIE from the towering spire of St. Muredach's Cathedral in Ballina has gone viral.

Chris Baird, a member of the crew of Rainey Restoration Limited which is carrying out repair works on the church, posted images taken from the cathedral's highest point.

The images underline that this type of work is certainly not for the faint-hearted or those with a fear of heights.

Said local man P.J. Clarke: 'Their sense of bravery is remarkable.'

The cathedral was built in 1834, in a Victorian Gothic style. The stone was quarried locally and the roof and ceiling were completed before the Great Famine of 1845. The spire was completed in 1855.
