VIDEO: Speculation over old Mayo pub as it gets a facelift

A MAYO public house that has not been open for business for a number of years is getting a facelift, fuelling speculation that it may open again.

Cannon's of Market Square. Castlebar, is one of the county town's oldest licenced premises.

The fact it has not been trading for some time is a source of disappointment of local people, who referred to the establishment as 'The Academy'.

When it was run by the late Mrs. & Mrs. Eddie Cannon, it was a unique pub in many respects where customers enjoyed a good conversation and a game of cards without a television being on in the background.

Castlebar people would love to see the day when it reopens again.

Over the past number of days, local painting contractor Ger Leonard has been painting the exterior of the premises.
