Two hikers rescued at Mweelrea mountain

MEMBERS of Mayo Mountain Rescue were called out last night in response to a distress call from two hikers whom had got into difficulty on steep ground at Mweelrea during unfavourable weather conditions.

Achill RNLI, along with the Westport Coast Guard, were also involved in the operation.

The hikers were located on the south face of the mountain.

Achill RNLI transported the Mountain Rescue Team members across Killary Harbour to the base of the mountain. The team reached the hikers at approximately 2.30 a.m. this morning and, using ropes, lowered the hikers to safety.

Said a spokesperson of Mayo Mountain Rescue: “We thank Achill RNLI, Westport Coast Guard and R118 for their assistance. It is great working with other agencies.”
