Pensioner's death in Manchester believed to be accidental

OLDER residents in the Carnacon/Moorehall area of Mayo are recalling with affection the late Patrick Walsh who died, aged 82, in Manchester this week.

Along with his wife, Nellie, Patrick worked tirelessly over the years on behalf of the Irish community in Manchester.

His passing has been deeply regretted by the British based Council of Irish Associations and the management of the Irish World Heritage Centre in Manchester.

Patrick, who emigrated around 1950, hailed from the townland of Roughaun, about half a mile on the Moorehall side of Carnacon village.

Councillor Al McDonnell, cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, who lives in Moorehall, said today that Mr. Walsh came from a very respectable local family.

He recalled that Patrick's brother, Michael, who lived in Roughaun, died about 10 years ago.

Mr. Walsh's body was discovered earlier this week in the River Tame, Reddish Vale, a short walk from his home.

Police have ruled out foul play, stating they believe the death was accidental.
