Gardaí issue renewed appeal over murder of Charlestown businessman

AN Garda Siochána have renewed their appeal for assistance in solving the murder of Charlestown businessman, Edward (Eddie) Fitzmaurice, at his home in Bellaghy, on May 6, 1998.

The 19th anniversary of his death takes place next week and gardaí are anxious that anybody with information, who may have been unable to come forward to date for whatever reason, to contact Claremorris Garda Station at 094-9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111.

The 83-year old had been assaulted, tied up, gagged and left to die over a period of five days.

At 6.45 p.m. on May 6, 1998, his body was found in a bedroom of his home.

It has been established that sometime between 8.20 p.m. on Friday, May 1, and Saturday morning, May 2, Eddie was attacked by intruder(s) in his home.

Despite an intensive garda investigation to identify the culprit(s), nobody has been charged to date with this crime.

However, the investigation remains open and it is hoped that those with information will take the opportunity of the 19th anniversary of Eddie's death to come forward.
