Rory's story on TV tonight

THIS evening (Wednesday) the story of 12-year-old Rory Staunton will be told on TG4 in a documentary on his parents’ quest to raise awareness of sepsis.

Rory died in 2012 in hospital in New York four days after scraping his arm playing basketball at school.

Ever since then, Orlaith and Ciarán, a native of Louisburgh, have taken on the American health care system to make sure that such a tragedy can never happen again.

The TG4 documentary, Dli Rory: Dochas O Neamh (Rory's life: Gift from Heaven), will air tonight at 8.30 p.m. It will also be streamed online during the broadcast slot: http://www.tg4.ie/en/live/home/

Rory’s died from sepsis, a condition of which his parents had never heard. Despite displaying symptoms, his condition went undetected in hospital and he was sent home. By the time he was readmitted and doctors diagnosed sepsis, it was too late to save him.

Through the Rory Staunton Foundation, Ciarán and Orlaith are campaigning to raise awareness of sepsis and have succeeded in changing the law in the US regarding how the condition is managed in hospitals.

The broadcast comes in a week when Rory should have been celebrating his 18th birthday.
