Richard Finn creates council history as new cathaoirleach

INDEPENDENT representative Richard Finn is the new cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

His father, the late Martin, a Fine Gael TD for Mayo, held the same position for a number of terms back in the 1980s.

As chief executive Peter Hynes noted in congratulating Richard following his appointment at the annual general meeting of the council today, it is the first time ever that a son or a daughter of a previous cathaoirleach has assumed the chairmanship.

Mr. Finn, a Claremorris based auctioneer and businessman, was proposed for the chair, in succession to Councillor Al McDonnell (FF), by Michael Holmes (Independent).

The nomination, seconded by Councillor Damian Ryan (FF), was carried unanimously.

The nomination of Fianna Fáil councillor John Caulfield to the position of vice-cathaoirleach was also carried unanimously.
