Gardaí progress Mayo homicide probe but no arrest yet

GARDAà  say their investigation into the tragic death of 21-year-old man from the U.K. from injuries received while visiting Co. Mayo are 'progressing satisfactorily'.

So far there has been no arrest in connection with the death of Joseph (Joe) Deacy, St. Alban's, Hertfordshire, who died in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, on Sunday from injuries consistent with an assault.

However, Supt Tony Healy said this afternoon there has been a good response to the garda appeal for information about Mr. Deacy's last movements in the town of Kiltimagh where he was socialising on Friday night/Saturday morning.

The young GAA player was discovered unconscious by a passerby in the laneway of a house at Derrynasillagh, Swinford, around  6 a.m. on Saturday.

He was rushed by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital and later to Beaumont Hospital where he subsequently died.

CCTV footage from premises in Kiltimagh which Mr. Deacy, a talented GAA footballer, is being studied by investigating gardai at a special incident room which has been set up at Claremorris Garda Station.

Supt Deacy said that a number of people who have been able to provide information about Mr. Deacy's last movements in Kiltimagh have been interviewed and statements taken.

It is understood that the parents of the deceased have returned to the U.K. but a close relative is staying on in Dublin to make arrangements for the funeral.

Meanwhile, authorities at St. Colmcille's GAA Club, Hertfordshire, where Joe Deacy was a talented and valued player, has urged club members deeply affected by the tragedy to avail of counselling.

They have provided a special contact number for those in need of counselling following the loss of a young man they described as 'a special member of the St. Colmcille family.â€
