Man has died in Castlebar house fire

A MAN in his sixties has died in a house fire in Castlebar, it has been confirmed.

The fire occurred at an apartment at Station Road in the town yesterday evening.

Two units of the Castlebar Fire-Fighting Unit were called to the scene and entered the building wearing breathing apparatus.

Other emergency services were called to the scene when the dead body was discovered and the scene was preserved overnight.

A number of people living in adjoining apartmnents had to be evacuated.

A forensic team is carrying out tests in the building to establish the cause of the blaze.    

The body of the man, who has not been named, has been removed to Mayo University Hospital this morning for a post-mortem examination
