Two arrested over Joe Deacy death are released without charge

GARDAÍ have released from custody two men who were being held for questioning in connection with the death of Joseph Deacy near Swinford last August.

The men were detained yesterday (Wednesday) under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and brought to separate garda stations in Mayo for questioning.

They were released this afternoon following the expiration of the 24 hour detention period.

Mr. Deacy, who was 21, was found dead outside a house at Gortnasillagh, Swinford, on August 12 last.

He was initially taken to Mayo University Hospital and later to Beaumont Hospital for treatment to serious head injuries.

Mr. Deacy,a promising Gaelic footballer, was visiting from his hometown. St. Alban's, Hertfordshire, at the time of his passing.

Following his death in Beaumont Hospital, a post mortem revealed that he died from significant head injuries which were not sustained accidentally, as first thought.
