€243,500 for three sports projects

FUNDING to the tune of €243,500 has been awarded to three regional sports projects in Mayo under the 2017 Sports Capital Programme.

The projects are: Claremorris GAA, 60x30 handball court, €79,500; Connacht GAA Council, Connacht GAA indoor arena, €98,500; and Mayo County GAA Board, Mayo GAA training campus, €65,500.

Commented Minister Michael Ring: “The Sports Capital Programme is the most important way in which the government assists in the development and refurbishment of sporting facilities and in the purchase of non-personal sports equipment.

The programme funds natural grass sports pitches, tracks and courts (including pitch drainage), floodlighting, artificial sports pitches, tracks, courts and multi-use games areas, security fencing, ball stop netting and goal posts, hurling walls and handball alleys, building or refurbishment of dressing rooms, showers and toilets, building or refurbishment of sports halls and gyms, and non-personal equipment including lawn mowers and defibrillators. The grant also covers other capital projects that are clearly sporting in nature and that will increase participation in sport or improve performance.

The regional projects in Mayo being funded will provide better equipment and facilities for athletes to train and compete to the best of their ability. The funding announced today follows on from the €1,645,977 approved to 68 local sports projects in Mayo recently.”
