Sinn Fein shock in Belmullet

OUTGOING Sinn Fein Councillor Teresa Whelan looks set to lose her seat in the Belmullet electoral area, writes Claire McNamara.

Councillor Whelan was co-opted to the authority in place of Senator Rose-Conway Walsh in 2016.

In a district where six candidates are vying for three seats, tallies suggest that outgoing Fine Gael Councillor Gerry Coyle will most definitely retain his seat with a poll-topping performance.

He is followed closely by Councillor Paul McNamara, who is on 24%. His Fianna Fáil party colleague, Sean Carey, looks set to take the third seat on 23%.

Councillor Coyle spoke to The Connaught Telegraph earlier, expressing his delight and thanking his team for their work throughout the campaign.
