Shannon is in seventh heaven

SHANNON Sweeney, St. Anne’s Boxing Club, won the National Under 22, 48kg title at the national men and women's novice championships on Saturday to bring her grand total of national titles to seven.

The Westport boxer had two tough contests en route to winning the title and won both her bouts on unanimous decisions.

Of the other Mayo boxers, Patrick Burke, Ballinrobe, won his opening contest in the quarterffinals of the novice division but did not have enough in the bag to win his semi-final.

Ciara Ginty, Geesala, was unfortunately on the wrong side in a close 2/1 decision in her final.

 

Novice quarterfinals

71kg, Damien O’Donoghue (St. Conleth) beat Conor Keane (Ballinrobe) TKO 2; 81kg, Patrick Burke (Ballinrobe) beat David Newell (Corrib) 2-1.

Men’s novice semi-finals

57kg, Erikas Skadas (Crumlin) beat Oisin Oliver (Aglish) 2-1; 81kg, Darren Cole (Ballincarrow) beat Patrick Burke (Ballinrobe) 3-0.

Women’s Under 22 semi-finals

48kg, Shannon Sweeney (St. Anne’s) beat Chloe Fleck (Canal) 3-0; 64kg, Cheyanne O’Neill (Athlone) beat Ciara Ginty (Geesala) 2-1.

Women’s Under 22 final

48kg, Shannon Sweeney (St. Anne’s) beat Ciara Anderson (Twin Towns) 3-0.
