Burrishoole victorious at Páidí Ó Sé tournament

THE Burrishoole Ladies GAA team are celebrating after a weekend victory in Co. Kerry.

Burrishoole Ladies and Crossmolina Deel Rovers competed in the Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé 2018, the famed club Gaelic football tournament and festival which took place last weekend in the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry.

In a round robin six team intermediate ladies competition, Burrishoole beat West Kerry side Corca Dhuibhne and St. Francis of Leitrim to make the final against Blessington of Wicklow. The Mayo ladies, who are previous winners of the comortas, showed no signs of tiredness playing their third match of the day and ran out winners on a scoreline of Burrishoole 5-15, Blessington 2-12.

Crossmolina Deel Rovers had mixed fortunes in the senior men’s competition where they defeated Kerry’s Ardfert 1-10 to 0-12 to reach a semi-final clash with Dingle. Although they matched each other score for score for much of the game, two goals in the second half killed off the Mayo men’s challenge, and they eventually lost on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-10.

Comórtas chairman Pádraig Ó Sé commented: “We are delighted that Burrishoole took some silverware back to Mayo with them. They will automatically get an invitation to be part of the 30th anniversary in 2019 and we hope they can join us for that special occasion.

We hope the Crossmolina lads got some value from the trip too and we wish them luck this season.

The festival has that combination of all that’s great about the GAA, lovely scenery, and friendly locals, that makes it a winning formula.”

The football festival, which welcomed over 1,000 players, mentors and supporters to west Kerry, was officially launched by German Ambassador to Ireland Mrs. Dieke Potzel and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, at Mercy Mounthawk School GAA pitch in Tralee last Saturday where they met the 50-strong men’s and ladies Team Germany, made up of six German GAA clubs.
