Mayo GAA County Board chairman Paddy McNicholas.

Tonights county board meeting expected to be a heated affair

The saga over the appointment of a new manager (managers) of the county senior football team is set to take centre stage at the Mayo County Board meeting tonight, due to get underway in Elverys MacHale Park, Castlebar, at 8.30 p.m.

Since the statement issued by the Mayo County Board on Saturday night that Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes were to be put forward to a full county board meeting as their recommendation for the top Mayo post, many questions have been asked as to what process the executive took before coming up with their recommendation.

The debate on the matter has gained momentum with each hour that has passed since Saturday night and what was at first a county issue has expanded to become a huge national story.

The part played by the chairman of the Mayo County Board, Paddy McNicholas, in all of this is the big talking point.

With one member of the county board executive having already resigned over the issue, there is a growing belief that the only way this is going to be resolved is if the chairman steps down from his post. The Kiltimagh club man has just over one year left in his five-year term as the county board chairman.

Between now and 8.30 p.m. this evening there is expected to be much dialogue among county board members to try and solve the matter before the full county board meeting gets underway.

If the matter is not resolved, a heated county board meeting is anticipated.
