Tenor david lynn prepares for 63rd wexford festival oper

AS artists from all over the world arrived for the start of rehearsals at Wexford Opera House, among them was tenor David Lynn from Ballina, who will be performing in no fewer than three opera productions in this year’s Wexford Festival Opera.

David will be on stage for the Il Tabarro (The Cloak) by Puccini as The Vendor of Songs and as a member of the chorus in two main stage operas, Don Bucefalo and Silent Night. This will be David’s Wexford festival debut.

David hails from Ballina and attended Gortnor Abbey Secondary School in Crossmolina. Always interested in music, he completed a degree in applied music from Dundalk Institute of Technology in 2011 and has since focused all his energy on training his voice. He recently finished a masters in performance from DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Stephen Wallace.

Since he started training, David has gained invaluable experience in DIT, including playing the lead role of Rodolfo in La Boheme. Other professional engagements for David include Aida, La Traviata (Lyric Opera), Flying Dutchman, Elixir of Love, Macbeth, Magic Flute (NI Opera), and Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (OTC/Rough Magic).

Other operatic roles include Flute (Midsummer Night’s Dream) with the Yorke Trust, Norfolk, while upcoming engagements include Opera Theatre Company’s revival of Elixir of Love and Strauss' Salomé for NI Opera.

But for now, David is based in Wexford finalising preparations for the town's opera festival. As one of the leading opera festivals in the world, each year it attracts audiences from home and abroad who travel to Wexford to experience this unique celebration of opera.

This year the festival runs from today (Wednesday) until Sunday, November 2. The main stage operas will be the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night, set against the backdrop of WWI (Kevin Puts), Salomé by Antoine Mariotte, and Don Bucefalo by Antonio Cagnoni.

The 63rd Wexford Festival Opera is grant-aided by the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland and Wexford County Council.
