257000 to be spent on mayos 35 wild atlantic way discovery points

Some €257,000 will be spent on remedial works at discovery and embarkation points along the Wild Atlantic Way in Mayo this year.

2015 will also see the rollout of photo points and branding at all 188 discovery points along the Wild Atlantic Way, including the offshore islands. This branding and interpretation phase will start to tell the stories of the Wild Atlantic Way for visitors to encourage a more meaningful engagement, Junior Minister for Tourism Michael Ring has confirmed.

The following are the points in Mayo: Ballina Quay, Barr na Binne Bui, Trá Oiligh, Oileán Chloigeann, Killala Quay, Ceann Iorrais, An Fál Mór, Ceann Ramhar, Lacken Strand, Dún na mBó, Blacksod Harbour (embarkation point), Doran’s Point (embarkation point), Céide, Inis Ge Theas, Oileán Chloigeann, Ceann Ramhar, Inis Bigil, Claggan, Dumhach Bheag, Spanish Armada Viewpoint, Cloghmore Pier (embarkation point), Cuan na hAisléime, Trá Dumha Ghoirt, Keel Beach, Clew Bay View, Murrisk Viewpoint, Old Head, Roonagh Quay (embarkation point), Clare Island, Inishturk, Carrowniskey Strand, White Strand, Doolough Famine Memorial, Aasleagh Falls and Keem Bay.

Downpatrick Head is a major signature point for the Wild Atlantic Way and received €640,000 to develop a must-see signature discovery point. This discovery point includes an iconic Spirit of Place installation (complementing six others in north Mayo) built around a blowhole, which will allow visitors to actually walk around its rim and experience it in a safe manner.
