Deputy Michelle Mulherin has welcomed Monasteries of the Moy funding

346472 for monasteries of the moy greenway

Leader funding of €346,472 for the construction of a 4.35 km off-road walking and cycling route between Killala and Rosserk as part of the Monasteries of the Moy greenway between Ballina and Killala has been announced.

Work on the section from Ballina at Belleek towards Knockatinole has already commenced, for which €250,000 was granted in May 2014

This is great news for the people of north Mayo who are seeing the development of a number of exciting tourism and cultural projects alongside the greenway, including a museum at Belleek Castle, Downpatrick Head and blowhole as a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way, the refurbishment of the Ceide Fields Interpretative Centre and the Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina,” said Fine Gael Deputy Michelle Mulherin.

I have been working on Monasteries of the Moy walking and cycling trail since 2011 when I brought the then Minister for the Office of Public Works, Brian Hayes, to Ballina where he meet with council officials and the Monasteries of the Moy committee to see at first hand the historic sites along the proposed greenway.

Following that I arranged a meeting with officials in the Department of Tourism, Fáilte Ireland, local management of Mayo County Council, members of Mayo North Tourism Committee and Minister of State Michael Ring and appraised the Taoiseach and the then Minister for Transport and Tourism, Leo Varadkar, of our plans and both were very supportive.

Piece by piece we have progressed this project. I am delighted that Minister Alan Kelly has now sanctioned Mayo North East Leader Partnership to approve funding of €346,472 to Mayo County Council towards the construction of the walking and cycling facility between the outskirts of Killala and the townland of Rosserk.

The part of the project is being advanced by the promoter, Mayo County Council, in cooperation with the local community group, Killala Chamber of Commerce and Killala Community Council. Funding for the project is being provided under the Village Renewal and Development measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.

I want to compliment all involved and, in particular, thank the landowners who are allowing the use of their land along this section and hope that any concerns of landowners along the rest of the route can be resolved to the satisfaction of all in due course.”
