Solar eclipse captures publics imagination

Mayo people have been enjoying the rare solar eclipse at a number of spots around the county this morning.

Reports are coming in that Clare Island has witnessed the best views, with Achill also proving a fruitful viewing point. There are also reports of fairly clear views of the eclipse in the Ballyhaunis and Kiltimagh regions.

It was a very cloudy start to the day in Castlebar, with a notable chill in the air from around 9 a.m. as darkness fell again.

The sun has since broken through in dazzling fashion.
