Silent vigil in mayo in support of the traditional family and marriage

ABOUT 50 people, describing themselves as 'supporters, advocates and defenders of the traditional family and marriage' participated in an open air vigil in Market Square, Castlebar, on Good Friday.

The vigil, which began at 5 p.m., was a silent one. It was held in response to the Children and Family Relationships Bill, which was passed through the Seanad last week.

Opponents of the Bill claim it was 'forced' through the Upper House 'with no say from the Irish public'.

Friday's protestors made it clear in a written statement issued to local media: “We also wish to oppose the redefinition of marriage in the upcoming referendum which will have frightening consequences for religious freedoms through the public and private sector and beyond.'
