Murphy family mourn death of mother

FORMER RTÉ broadcaster Michael Murphy is mourning the death of his much loved mother, Sue, who has died, aged 94, in Castlebar, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

The retired newsreader, who now works as a psychoanalyst, travelled regularly to Mayo to visit his beloved mother in a nursing home, although he conceded in a recent interview that such meetings were painful due to the nature of her illness.

She was once the hub of the family but that's not anymore and there's silence now,” he said regretfully.

She lives in a house of pure being where there's no future, no past, only the present.”

Sue Murphy was originally from Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. She married a Mayo man, the late Tommy Murphy.

Apart from Michael, she is survived by three other sons, John, Tom and Fintan (Mayo county registrar), and their families. She was predeceased by a son, Kieran.

Mrs. Murphy will be laid to rest tomorrow (Saturday) in the Old Cemetery, Castlebar.
