Sean Flanagan after receiving the Sam Maguire

Video archive footage of a glorious day for mayo gaa

HERE'S a sight we'd like to see replicated on the third Sunday in September – a Mayo captain lifting the Sam Maguire.

Ahead of Sunday's crucial All-Ireland semi-final match with Dublin we've done some digging in the archives where we found this footage from the 1950 final.

On that day Mayo defeated Louth, led by captain Sean Flanagan, before a crowd of 76,000 – many of them seated down along the sideline, others on roof tops, and underneath the scoreboard.

Some things haven't changed in 65 years – the selling of the county colours on the streets and the Artane Boys Band leading out the teams in Croke Park.

Louth opened the scoring that day, but Mayo – 'the pride of the west' – were to lift the cup.
