Search for daniel doherty continuing

AN extensive search is continuing today for young fisherman Daniel Doherty, missing off Belmullet since Friday last.

The 23-year-old from Carrowtigue has not been seen since going out to lift lobster pots in Broadhaven Bay. His empty 30-foot boat, a half decker, was found late on Friday night on the shoreline closed to Benwee Head.

Members of the local community, local fishermen and gardaí are all involved in the search while a plea for the Irish Naval Services to become involved in the search is under consideration.

Gardaí divers are in the water today. The coast guard helicopter is also involved together with the RNLI, coordinating boats searching the waters, going out from  Ballycastle and  Porturlin.

The Coast guard is coordinating the search of the headland with the local community and are joined by the civil defence, backed up by the Order of Malta.

Emma Doherty, Daniel’s sister, said her family are very grateful to everyone that has been assisting in the search to date.
