Irish tv to broadcast live for 23 hours from ploughing championships

EUROPE’S largest outdoor event, the National Ploughing Championships, return to Ratheniska, Co. Laois, for a third year and Irish TV will broadcast the event live on Sky 191 for seven and a half hours daily over its three-day run next week.

The 84th National Ploughing Championships take place from Tuesday to Thursday next (September 22 to 24), and Irish TV will be in the thick of the action, bringing visitors and audiences at home a packed schedule of programming and activity.

Over 200,000 visitors will have the chance to enjoy the best of Irish TV, with live television broadcasts, musical performances and exclusive events with Irish TV presenters.

The CEO of Irish TV, Pierce O’Reilly, commented: “Irish TV will be at the heart of the action in terms of broadcast output right across the three days. The Irish TV set on-site last year proved to be a hugely popular hub for visitors of all ages to sample a flavour of the full range of Irish TV activities and services, and we look forward to meeting the people again at this year’s event.”

The channel will start broadcasting live from the grounds in Ratheniska at 11 a.m. daily and will air live until 6.30 p.m. each day. Irish TV presenters Ken Murray, Alan Cantwell (pictured) and Sile Ni Dheargain will be presenting live from the site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the three days.

“I’m delighted to be working with Irish TV,” said Cantwell. “It’s a great honour to be given a live three-hour TV show. The show will be a mix of entertainment, lifestyle and political issues. I’m really looking forward to covering the National Ploughing Championships for Irish TV this year.”

The head of PR and marketing at Irish TV, Liam Joyce, said the station is delighted to have Alan on board. “He has a huge amount of experience in broadcasting, particularly in news and current affairs, so he’s a great fit for it,” he added.

Irish TV’s Alan Brereton will present Grassroots, the two-hour farming and agricultural show, from 3 to 5 p.m. during the three days. Grassroots is Irish TV’s flagship weekly series which delves into the business of farming through site visits, interviews with industry experts and a focus on emerging technology.  

Meanwhile, Ireland's Country with Malachi Cush is guaranteed to lift the roof with a very special country music session featuring guests and live music, and will also contain all the day’s ploughing championships results.
