Huge turnout for memorial mass in ballina for the late garda tony golden

A HUGE crowd attended a Memorial Mass for the late Garda Tony Golden in his native town of Ballina this evening.

St. Muredach’s Cathedral could not cope with the large numbers. The chief celebrant was Bishop John Fleming of the Killala Diocese. He was assisted by ten other members of the local clergy.

Mary and Sean Golden, a sister and brother of the late Garda Golden, recited readings at the poignant ceremony. It took over an hour for mourners to pay their respects to the Golden family afterwards, such was the big turnout.

Garda Golden was a son of David and Breege Golden, Culleens, Killala Road, Ballina.

The head of the Mayo Garda Division, Chief Supt. Pat Diskin, was in attendance at the Mass.

Garda Golden, a father-of-three, was shot dead on Sunday, October 11, after he went to the aid of a woman who was the victim of domestic violence.

He was laid to rest on Thursday at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Heynestown, following a State Funeral in his honour at the Church of St. Oliver Plunkett, Blackrock, Co. Louth, attended by thousands.
