Westport says no

WESTPORT Town Hall was packed tonight (Tuesday) as the community gathered in a show of solidarity for Westport House and its owners, the Browne family.

Discussions are ongoing between NAMA, Mayo County Council and at government level to ensure the estate and historical home don't fall into private ownership.

The community sent a clear message from the public meeting: the negotiations cannot fail.

A point was made by one of the speakers from the floor that were Muckross in Co. Kerry put up for sale, it would not be tolerated. Westport House is a critical part of local heritage and its economic importance was again spelt out – it generates a €50 million annual spend in the area.

Councillor Tereasa McGuire summed up the feeling of the meeting: “Westport Says No.”
