Judge Mary Devins

Bail refused for mayo man charged with assault causing harm

A DISTRICT court judge said she found it hard to ignore eight previous bench warrants as an application for bail was made in relation to a man charged with an assault in Ballinrobe earlier this month.

At Castlebar District Court today (October 21), Judge Mary Devins remanded the accused - John Conroy of 2 Bog Road, Ballinrobe - in custody to Harristown court on Friday (October 23), noting the possibility that there may be further charges brought against him then.

The State offered evidence that Conroy was arrested and charged yesterday (October 20), and objected to bail due to the serious nature of the charge (assault causing harm), the possibility that the accused would interfere with witnesses, and the fact of his bench warrant history.

Conroy said he was prepared to surrender his passport and sign on daily in a garda station if required. He also agreed to stay away from witnesses if given a list of them.

However, Judge Devins said she couldn't ignore the eight previous bench warrants and remanded the accused in custody.
