Call for immediate work on Mayo rivers

TWO elected members of Mayo County Council have called on the authority to take a number of actions to alleviate the problems experienced by many business and home owners during Storm Desmond.

Councillor Damian Ryan said the council must start maintaining two south Mayo rivers - the Robe and Bulcáin - for the first time in over 40 years.

He  also called for remedial works to prevent any future flooding in the Hazel court estate in Ballinrobe and highlighted the need for a permanent pump to relieve water levels at The Neale/Cong area.

Cleaning and dredging of the River Deel are two of the measures needed in Crossmolina to assist drainage and help prevent further flooding, according to  Councillor Michael Loftus.

He said flood protection works in the north Mayo town must be given top priority status by the council as a repeat of what occurred in recent weeks cannot be contemplated.
