Mayo train services back running as normal

TRAIN services in Mayo are back running as normal after being disrupted today when a machine working on the track in the Ballyhaunis area overnight experienced mechanical difficulties and could not be removed from the line.

Passengers waiting for the 5.20 and 7.15 a.m. service from Westport to Dublin were brought by coach to Athlone.

But dozens of people were stranded at the platform in Castlerea train station with no sign of a train or a bus.

According to reports, there was no notice up in the unmanned station and passengers organised among themselves to hire a coach to take them to Athlone.

A spokesperson for Iarnroid Eireann issued a statement to Midwest Radio stating that the bus was late arriving at Castlerea station because the company had difficulties securing a vehicle.

She said the machine was cleared off the line by 10 a.m. and services are again running as normal.
