No contamination in island water supply

IRISH Water has restored full water supply to Clare Island following a potential contamination incident on the island yesterday (Monday).

The incident was reported on Monday morning, which led to swift action by Mayo County Council and Irish Water.

While investigations were initiated, for the protection of public health, the water supply in the affected area of the island was shut off and the network drained. An immediate precautionary do not use notice was put in place locally. Bottled water was also ferried to the island.

An investigation ensued which found that no contamination incident had taken place.

Irish Water, in consultation with the HSE and the EPA, lifted the do not use notice which had been imposed on the affected area of the island.

Full water supply was restored to the island at 8 p.m. on Monday night.

Irish Water and Mayo County Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused.
