Quinn gives it his all

MAYO'S Nicholas Quinn turned in a polished performance to win his heat in the 200m breaststroke at the Rio Olympics this evening.

He excelled in the second half of his race to take top spot, unfortunately missing out on qualification for the semi-finals by a narrow 0.41 of a second.

Swimming in his main event, Quinn and Brazilian Cales Cerdeira battled it out for most of the race. Cerdeira, however, could not sustain the pace and Quinn powered through to touch the wall in 2:11.67, his fastest morning swim ever and second fastest 200m breaststroke swim to date.

The Castlebar swimmer had gone into the event ranked 27th and finished in 19th place, having been in the top 16 until the last heat. Losing out by just .41 of a second, a time equal to his best of 2:11.24 would have seen him through to the semi-final.
