Castlebar's Main Street closed to traffic after two-car crash

MAIN Street in Castlebar has been closed to traffic this evening following a two-car crash at the location.

A male who drove his car down the one-way street in the wrong direction collided with another car outside Allied Irish Banks.

Gardaí were called to the scene and the motorist in the car who broke the one-way regulation was taken away for questioning at Castlebar Garda Station.

There was a number of people in the other vehicle and they are understood to have escaped without serious injuries, albeit somewhat shocked.

The street was closed to traffic for over an hour while an investigation took place at the crash scene. Traffic diversions were in place.

Thanks to the swift work of members of Castlebar Firefighting Unit, the street was reopened just before 8 p.m. and a local funeral did not have to be diverted.
