Former Mayoman of the Year and Bord Failte chief dies in New York

THE death has taken place in New York of Joe Malone, a native of Breaffy, Castlebar.

In his late 80s, the deceased was a former chief executive officer of Bord Failte and will be remembered as one of the outstanding pioneers of Irish tourism.

He is a former Mayoman of the Year and was education at St. John's NS, Breaffy, and St. Jarlath's College, Tuam.

The deceased set up Ireland's first car-hire company in Dublin back in the 1950s. He also served as a director of Breaffy House Hotel for many years.

He is survived by his wife Imelda, his son and four daughters, to whom sympathy is tendered.

Sympathy is also extended to his sisters Maureen Barrett, Breaffy, Aine Deacy, Errew, Castlebar, and Margaret Mulcahy, Breaffy and Galway, as well as other family members.

Mr. Malone had a close association with the Fianna Fáil party and was one of the organisation's leading fundraisers for many years.
