New hospital manager outlines growth in activity

THE recently appointed general manager of Mayo University Hospital, Catherine Donohoe, has outlined the growth in activity at the hospital and some specific changes over the last year and highlighted the number of job opportunities at the hospital currently.

Commenting Catherine Donohoe said: “It was an extremely busy year at Mayo University Hospital as the number of patients we treat continues to grow. Across almost all the services we provide, we treated more patients in 2016.

“Our emergency department attendances increased by 3.5% on 2015 compared to a 2.7% increase in 2015 from 2014, admissions from the ED were up by 5%, our day cases were up by 7.29% and our births were up by 2.73% up to the end of November.

“We had a number of significant new appointment and positive initiatives in 2016 including our third quality and patient safety symposium – we have been working over the last number of years on a number of important quality initiatives including projects to improve communication with our patients and our staff.

“It is a very exciting time to work in Mayo University Hospital as we are venturing into this new focused approach for management, as part of the Saolta hospital group we have really advanced the process of clinicians in management and we are going the step further now and engaging our patients in the governing of the hospital.

“We have a number of vacancies at the hospital following some retirements and natural attrition mostly for promotional reasons and we are looking forward to filling these posts early in 2017.

“We have recently appointed a new finance manager Adrian Burke, new director of midwifery and we have a new HR manager starting in February. We are currently recruiting an IT manager and director of nursing and a number of senior and middle grade Nursing positions.

“I would urge those who would be interested in progressing this ethos of strong patient engagement and staff appreciation to look at these exciting roles and details on all these positions are available on the HSE website at www.hse.ie.

“I would welcome an opportunity to talk to interested parties as we are really keen to build our team from management level to front line with this focus and ambition.”
