Grave concern over condition of cemetery

A SMALL, overgrown graveyard on the outskirts of Castlebar has been described by a member of Mayo County Council as a ‘proper eyesore’, writes Tom Gillespie.

Councillor Al McDonnell said he has been approached by several people over the condition of Ballynew Cemetery.

The graveyard, beside the N5 Tyres outlet, is on the path of the Castlebar to Turlough greenway, which is used by hundreds of people daily.

Councillor McDonnell stated: “Out of respect for those buried there and those passing it every day the area needs to be cleaned up and be better maintained in the future.

Hundreds of people, both on foot and bicycles, pass there each day and many have commented on the poor condition of the graveyard.

I would like to see something done with it. There may be some archaeological issues involved but nevertheless action needs to be taken to remove the weeds, cut briars and generally clean up the area.”

The issue was raised at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting in Turlough on Thursday.
